Trekking to Australian Base Camp. Dhampus Nepal

“Gazing at Nepal’s towering mountains, which serve as timeless sentinels, can humble you like nothing else.

After an exhilarating adventure of white water rafting, we continue our journey to the town of Pokhara, known as a paradise for trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. Our next thrilling adventure awaits us at the Australian Base Camp, a gem nestled in the Annapurna region.

All packed and ready!

Our two-day trek commences from a quaint roadside village called Phedi, which serves as the starting point of our trail. Accompanied by our local guide, Jun, our backpacks loaded, and hiking boots laced back on, we set off on the initial leg of our hike.

As we climb higher and higher, we encounter vast paddy fields and tiny homes where local children greet us joyfully, offering us a glimpse into their way of life. The weather is unpredictable, oscillating between hot and cold.

The trail is steep, long and uneven.

And we allow ourselves many stops.

Finally, after almost four hours of climbing, we reach the quaint village of Kande, where we stop for lunch. Another plate of momos (Tibetan dumplings) and fried rice is all it takes to revive us.

Me, walking in the hailstorm.

Soon after we set off, the weather takes an unexpected turn, and we find ourselves caught in a hailstorm. Conveniently, we manage to buy plastic bags that we improvise into raincoats and continue on the trail. We must keep moving on, as time is running out and Jun is worried at our nonchalant pace!

We continue our journey for another three hours, steadily climbing higher into the misty, cold, and damp mountains. Despite the challenging conditions, the sheer beauty of the landscape keeps our spirits high.

Finally, by late afternoon, we arrive at the Australian Base Camp at Dhampus. At 2165 meters, it is cold, windy, misty, and the elusive mountain range is completely covered in thick clouds.

We check into very basic rooms, lacking hot water, towels, or amenities. But no one grumbles, as this is quite a remote place. This base camp has other visitors, from all parts of the world.

Suddenly, there is a call, and we rush out to be greeted by a stunning view of the Annapurna Mountain Range. Miraculously, the clouds have cleared and unveiled the majestic Annapurna mountain range in all its glory, leaving us in awe of nature’s grandeur.

There before me are the stunning views of Annapurna South (7219m), Annapurna III (7575m), Annapurna IV (7535m), Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) (6993m), as well as Hiunchuli (6441m), and Mt. Manaslu (8,163m). This is truly a breathtaking moment. I even managed to capture this video.

Our stay at the Australian Base Camp allows us to disconnect from the world, immerse ourselves in the serenity of the mountains, and connect with fellow trekkers, all with wonderful travel stories to share. It is a humbling experience that reminds us of the raw beauty and simplicity of life in the Himalayas.

In the end, our trek from Pokhara to the Australian Base Camp is a test of our endurance, but the breathtaking views and the sense of accomplishment make it a journey we will cherish forever. If you’re a trekking enthusiast seeking a challenging yet rewarding adventure, this hidden gem in Nepal should be on your bucket list.

The following morning, we wake up to the crisp and cold mountain air and a warm sunrise that bathes the landscape in golden hues. Again, the sunrise paints this mountain range with nature’s most wondrous brush, and this sight will be etched in my memory for a very long time.

The Australian Base Camp is not just a destination; it’s a journey that connects you with nature, people, and yourself, leaving an indelible mark on your soul.

A final look at the mountains from the Australian Camp
