Tale of Two Landscapes. Pekoe Trail 10. Horton Plains Sri Lanka

Setting off on the Pekoe Trail 10 in reverse, we commence our adventure at 8 a.m., starting with a 4-km trek through the enchanting landscapes of Horton Plains.

The crisp morning air greets us as the seven of us set foot on the trail, eager for the adventures that lie ahead. It is mandatory to get tickets (at the entrance) before we begin. We are also cautioned about lurking leopard along this trail!

With each step, the mist-clad landscape unfolds before us, revealing the verdant colors and contrasts of one of Sri Lanka’s amazing natural wonders. Horton Plains is rich in biodiversity and many species found here are endemic to the region.

As we traverse the winding paths of Horton Plains, our senses are awakened by the sights and sounds of the wilderness. It is refreshing to be surrounded by tall gnarled Rhododendrons, montane grasslands and cloud forest.

Though the elusive leopard remains hidden from our view, the thrill of the chase adds an air of excitement to our trek. Despite the absence of our feline friend, the beauty of Horton Plains captivates us at every turn.

We pause often to admire wildflowers, and drink in the scenery, allowing ourselves to be fully immersed in the magic of this pristine wilderness.

Almost two hours later we arrive at the end of our Horton Plains leg-of-the-trail. There is a ticket office here for anyone entering the park from this end.

From here on, our journey takes us into the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country.

The landscape undergoes a transformation as we leave behind the untamed wilderness and enter the orderly rows of tea plantations. Rolling hills carpeted in vibrant green stretch as far as the eye can see, a testament to the island’s rich tea-growing heritage.

Amidst the emerald sea of tea bushes, we encounter a different kind of beauty – one shaped by human hands and generations of tradition. Workers tend to the tea plants with care, their movements rhythmic after years of practice.

As the day progresses, the temperature rises, prompting us to stop frequently for hydration. Every water pipeline along the way is an opportunity to moisten our faces and refresh our bodies. Despite the scorching gravel paths along the trail, spanning the remaining 11 kilometers through Dayagama East and West estates, the relentless heat intensifies the challenge of our hike. By the way, the Heat Index Advisory for today is at “caution” levels.

The trail is also still unmarked and if not for the AllTrails app, we would definitely go down the wrong path.

An occasional draft of wind or shade from a tree is respite for us. It truly is a hot day and no wonder we don’t come across any other hikers.

After traversing the wild, misty expanse of Horton Plains and the meticulously tended highland vistas, the disparity becomes palpable under the sweltering sun. It takes us 6h 30m to finally reach our journey’s end.

Gosh, am I glad to get back to Glen Lyon bungalow (Agrapatana) and a chance to cool off under a cold shower. Pekoe Trail 10 was hot and arduous but I am happy to clock in eight completed trails!

It was indeed a super experience to be part of this group and enjoyed every moment apart from possibly the last hour. You have captured the beauty and the experience , better than what it probably was at the time and it is indeed a super memory recall. Thanks Mihiri for making us a part of this journey and would now say I am looking forward to the next.
