The history of the Ambuluwawa Temple dates back to the 13th century during the reign of King Buwanekabahu IV. It is said that the Ambuluwawa Peak was the center of the Gampola Kingdom during his reign. Although there are no historical artifacts to be found here, the mountain itself hosts an array of approximately 200 different plant species.

Ascending Ambuluwawa Tower is no mean feat, as its impressive height of 48 meters (157.4 ft) offers a thrilling challenge. Undeterred by the warnings of crowds, we embark on our ascent, fueled by curiosity and the promise of breathtaking views. It is a weekday and quite early in the morning, so the steep and narrow spiral stairway is uncrowded, and within a mere 30 minutes, we reach the pinnacle of this architectural wonder.

As we gaze out from the tower’s narrow observation point, a panorama of natural splendor unfolds before our eyes. The surrounding mist-laden mountains create a mystical ambiance, adding to the ethereal charm of the experience.

From the top, we are treated to a bird’s-eye view of the lush landscapes. On a clear day is it possible to see Piduruthalagala from the East, Bible Rock (Bathalegala) from the West, Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) from the South and Knuckles Mountain Range from the North, but unfortunately, because of today’s cloud cover these views are somewhat obstructed. Meanwhile, we are holding on tight to the rails, in case we tip over the top!

Beyond its impressive height and scenic vistas, Ambuluwawa Tower is a testament to Sri Lanka’s multicultural fabric.

The Hindu kovil
The Mosque

Serving as a religious site, the tower embraces four faiths, featuring a blend of architectural elements from different cultures. A Buddhist temple, an Islamic mosque, a Christian church, and a beautiful Hindu kovil coexist harmoniously, embodying the nation’s spirit of religious tolerance and unity. Exploring the site allows us to appreciate the beauty of diversity and the shared human yearning for spiritual solace.

Our adventure to Ambuluwawa Tower is a captivating blend of natural beauty and cultural exploration. The towering structure, with its impressive height, provides a vantage point that rewards us with breathtaking vistas. The multicultural essence of the site leaves an enduring impression, reminding us of the power of unity amidst diversity.
