It’s day one, and the excitement is palpable as we, a group of twelve thrill-seeking, like-minded friends, set off on our seven-day motorbike tour through the enchanting land of Ladakh. This trip has been put together by the most attentive Raj from https://himalayantrekkers.com

Leaving steaming Delhi (42°C) in the morning aboard a Spice Jet domestic flight (after nearly missing the flight because we got to the wrong terminal!), we arrive in Leh, Ladakh, at an altitude of 3,520 meters (11,550 feet) and a cold, crisp outside temperature of 10°C.

We are warmly welcomed at the airport by Barzi, the young, trendy owner of Ladakh Travel Hub.
From here, we proceed to our hotel, Jeevanam Villa, where we check in and are advised to rest in order to acclimatise to the altitude.

That afternoon, we pay a visit to the titular king of Ladakh, Jigmed Namgyal, the 37th successor of the Namgyal legacy . Formally known as Gyalpo Jigmed Wangchuk Namgyal, he is the scion of Ladakh’s 400-year-old Namgyal dynasty and lives in the magnificent Stok Palace. Nestled amid the stark beauty of Ladakh’s high mountain passes and verdant valleys, Stok Palace stands as a testament to centuries of history and culture. The palace, a beacon of Ladakhi heritage, has watched over the land since 950AD, offering a window into the royal life of the Namgyal dynasty.

As we approach, the palace’s ancient stone walls and intricate murals seem to whisper tales of bygone eras.

Stepping into the Stok Palace feels like stepping into another world. The air is filled with a sense of timelessness, and the walls are adorned with vibrant murals that tell stories of Ladakh’s past. Our guide, Sudamma, leads us through the palace’s multi-level courtyards, each corner revealing another piece of the intricate puzzle that is Ladakhi architecture.

The large, decorative balconies on the upper levels offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, making it easy to see why this site has been a royal residence for so long.

The highlight of our day is undoubtedly the high tea with Jigmed at Chulli Bagh, which literally means ‘garden of apricots’. Having connected with him beforehand, I eagerly anticipate learning about the history of his ancestry. Jigmed is a gracious host, regaling us with stories of Ladakh’s history and the Namgyal dynasty’s legacy. As we enjoy the delicate pastries and the rich, aromatic tea, it is impossible not to feel a profound connection to the land and its people. His tales bring to life the vibrant culture and traditions that have endured through the centuries, making our visit all the more special.
Our first day in Ladakh is a whirlwind of discovery and wonder. The Stok Palace and our high tea with the king have set a high bar for the rest of our journey. As we drive back to our hotel, the setting sun casting long shadows over the mountains, we can’t help but feel a sense of awe. Ladakh, with its impossible beauty and enduring spirit, has already begun to weave its magic around us. This is just the beginning, and we anticipate the adventures to come will be nothing short of extraordinary.

A fantastic narration of events. This really helps to recap names, events and places which soon gets mixed up. Thank you Mihiri for the beautiful write up. Looking forward to the rest .
