Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka, Dunumadalawa, also known as Wakarawatte or ‘Walker’s Estate’, overlooks the historic city of Kandy. Spanning over 500 acres, this stunning forest reserve lies off Rajapihilla Mawatha, on the edge of the Hanthana Mountain Range.
Having heard about this place, Krishni and I, along with our knowledgeable guide, Ekanayaka, set out to explore this verdant sanctuary. Walking through Dunumadalawa feels like stepping into a vibrant tapestry of life. The air is rich with the scent of wild tea trees and the earthy aroma of jak trees. These giants create a lush canopy that shelters a diverse array of wildlife, making the reserve a thriving ecosystem.

After entering the reserve, we walk through the forest paths with Ekanayaka pointing out various plants and animals, sharing fascinating insights about the reserve. The rustling leaves reveal a curious monkey swinging through the branches, and we even catch a glimpse of a shy deer peeking through the underbrush. For the more adventurous, sightings of wild boar and porcupines are not uncommon, adding a thrill to the trek. The real prize, however, is the elusive leopard. Though rarely seen, these majestic creatures roam the forest, embodying the untamed spirit of Dunumadalawa.
Bird watchers will find paradise here, with the dense foliage providing a haven for numerous bird species. Birds of prey hover over the large lake, while the Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill (Ocyceros gingalensis) disturbs the peace with its incessant call. The melodic calls of other exotic birds echo through the trees, creating a serene soundtrack to our adventure. The forest reserve’s diverse flora includes wild tea trees, some of which are remnants of ancient plantations, and massive jak trees, abundant with fruit, standing as silent guardians, providing food and shelter to the forest’s inhabitants.
After a pleasant walk, we reach a rest area, a serene spot where we sit and soak in the natural beauty around us. With prior notice, the park guides will prepare a basic meal of pol roti and lunu miris at this rest area. We make a mental note to revisit.
The reserve is not just a place of natural beauty; it’s a crucial lifeline for Kandy. The Dunumadala Oya, which runs through the reserve, ensures that the city has a steady water supply, highlighting the importance of preserving this pristine environment.
As we linger on, rain clouds gather overhead, signaling it’s time to leave. But it has been a morning well spent!

There is no entrance fee. However, permission to enter is required from the Municipal Council and the reserve warden.
