As an unapologetic repeat guest to the Backwaters Lodge, I’m back for the fifth time! This time, the thrill of the night safari along the mystic Kala Oya awaits, and I can hardly contain my excitement.

As the sun dips below the horizon, and after savoring yet another fabulous meal, I make my way to the mooring point where Arosh, the boatman cum naturalist, eagerly awaits. The anticipation in the air is palpable as we gear up for an adventure like no other.

“As an unapologetic repeat guest to the Backwaters Lodge, I’m back for the fifth time!”

Flashlights in hand, head torches secured, we set off on canoes paddled by oars, ready to uncover the secrets of the night.

The Kala Oya, a tranquil river meandering through the jungle, becomes our path to discovery. The dark night encompasses the stillness around us, creating a magical ambiance. With each paddle stroke, a surge of exhilaration courses through me, wondering what the night has in store.

And oh boy, the jungle doesn’t disappoint! Our first spotting is the elusive Slender Loris—an enigmatic nocturnal primate known for its slow movements and those mesmerizing, round eyes that could rival any superhero’s gaze. It’s a game of hide-and-seek with this creature of the night, and every glimpse feels like a victory. We spot a total of six of these elusive creatures tonight.

A Loris in the Night | Wild Sri Lanka

Moving deeper into the wilderness, we’re enticed by the stealthy presence of fishing cats. These sleek felines are on the prowl, their eyes gleaming with determination. It’s like watching a live nature documentary, and we’re the lucky audience.

But wait, the adventure doesn’t end there! There are jungle cats  prowling in the shadows with a grace that commands respect. It’s awe-inspiring to witness the diversity of wildlife thriving in their natural habitat. Apart from these elusive creatures, there’s much more to see along this river. The creature calls break the silence of the night and echoes across the waters. The river is teeming with fish, leaping in and out of the water, and various other creatures that call this place their home, painting a vivid tapestry of life.

The night safari at Backwaters Lodge isn’t just about sightings; it’s about gaining a newfound appreciation for the nocturnal world. The guides share fascinating insights into the behaviors and adaptations of these remarkable creatures, adding a layer of understanding to our awe.

After two hours along the river, we paddle back. The still clear waters mirror our sense of calm and contentment.

Boating Down the Uppu Aru

Apart from this night boat safari, the evening boat ride on the Uppu Aru that runs alongside the Backwaters Lodge is also an unforgettable experience that leaves me craving for more. The evening sky takes on a different color scheme every evening. This time I was lucky to stop and watch three male elephants take their evening bath on the riverbank.

It’s a must-try for every adventurer out there—immersing yourself in the mysteries of the night, surrounded by the wild and still clear waters. What a wild ride it is!

The End of Another Day!
